Challenge Assumptions

Assumption

[uhsuhmp-shuh n]

as·sump·tion

You Know What They Say About Assumptions?

Hint:  Ain’t Very Nice.  May Even Hurt Feelings.

This Year (& All Subsequent Years For That Matter), Do Not Take Nuthin’ For Granted.

(1) Too Difficult?  Maybe Not.  Keep It Simple.

(2) Too Expensive?  Not Necessarily.  Run The Numbers.

(3) Too Complicated?  Sure, If You Make It.  Break It Down.

⇓ See Down Yonder For More Info / Ideas / Resources / Nonsense ⇓

(1) Everything Ya’ll Need to Know About Health, Safety, & Såh-kHür-îh-Tāy:

***Don’t Get Sick.  Don’t Get Hurt.  Don’t Die.

Heed & Periodically Re-Read & Re-Heed Above Cuz Practice Makes Perfect.***  Encourage Same of Employees/Co-Workers/Family/Friends/Foes…

Hypothetical Question(s) For the Kind (& Even The Not-So-Kind) Folks Who Are Exposed to Hazards:

What Hazards In This [Shop / Warehouse / Construction Zone / Building / Office / Clinic / Hospital / Fill-In-The-Blank] Could [Make Folks Sick / Hurt People / Kill Somebody Dead] ???

What Can I/We/They Do To Make Certain That This Does Not Happen???

(2) ¿Dinero = Problemo?

Be Creative.  Use In-House Resources First.  The Internet Is Chockablock Full Of Checklists, Flowcharts, Diagrams, Pictures, Training Resources, PowerPoint Presentations (Should You Be So Draconian), Sample Safety/Health Programs, Etc.

Word To The Wise:

Although I Swear Under Penalty of Profundity That Everything On Them Internets & Those Websites Is & Are In Fact True & Accurate, Consider Free, Open-Source Resources Associated With .GOV / .STATE / .EDU /.MIL Web Addresses Before Converting Electronic Money Into Tax Deductions; Save It For A Gas-Guzzlin’ Merican-Made 4×4 With A Lift Kit.

(3) How Do You Eat An Elephant?  A Little At a Time.  A Bite At A Time.  A little bit at a time.  A little bite at a time.  (Or Something Like That.  This Idiom Escapes Me.)

In Other Words, You Do Not Have to Become An Expert Overnight.  Just Commit To Being “A Little More Better” Every Day.

Although Some Backsliding Is Expected, Do Not Lose Faith:  Keep Pushing Forward.  Keep Improving.

Many Employers – If Not Most Employers – Overlook In-House Talent.  Ask For Help (Eating the Elephant).  Some Folks Might Be Hungry (To Learn/Grow/Help/Showcase Raw Talent).  Others Simply Refuse To Eat On An Empty Stomach.

Do Not Impulsively Hire “Experts” To Solve Problems That You & Your Crew Can Solve.  Your Results Might Just Surprise You.  And, the Benefits (of Team-Based Problem Solving) Could Carry Over Into Other Aspects of Your Business.

Otherwise:  There Is Nary A Shortage Of Consultants Who Long To Be Under-Worked & Over-Paid.

Fight or Flight

Do something!

Do NOT freeze.

Have will.

Build skill.

Mitigate.

Eliminate.

Failure to Plan, Prepare, & React Can Be Fatal Because:

Hazards always lurch.

Hazards never take a day off.

Hazards capitalize on vulnerabilities.

Hazards strike without warning.

Hazards warrant vigilance.

HAZWOPER Help

Awareness?  Ops Level?  Technican?

First responder?  HAZMAT specialist?  Incident commander?

Want help with HAZWOPER???  (Hint:  Say Yes!  We all do.)

Like it or not, there is no substitute for reading (& re-reading) regulations.  (Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.)

But, there are resources (with checklists) that can help.

Or – heck! – you can just wing it!  Why not?  What could it hurt?!

Uh, probably not…

Hazardous Waste Operations & Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) activity warrants training, refresher training, re-training, checklists, rigorous documentation, after-action review, & post-incident reporting.

Avoid the Dirty Dozen

Human Factors & Accidents:

Can you draw parallels to your industry???

“The human condition is that we make mistakes. Mistakes are not only common they are universal. People make mistakes because they are people, not because they are deficient in some way. Error and success result from the same mental processes so we cannot experience one without the other. Since aviation is terribly unforgiving of human error, we cannot afford to allow mistakes to ‘escape’ and erode the safety of our system.”
